Richard Scher, MD/FACP Biography
Richard K. Scher, MD, FACP is Professor of Dermatology at the University
of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill, NC and Professor Emeritus of
Dermatology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia
University in New York City. Dr. Scher graduated from New York
University (BA), Brooklyn College Graduate School (MA in Biochemistry) –
both in New York—and received his MD degree from Howard University in
Washington DC. He trained in Dermatology at New York University Medical
Center, including Skin and Cancer and Bellevue Hospitals, where he also
obtained a MS degree (Dermatology) from New York University
Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital. Dr. Scher is also the
recipient of an Honorary Master of Arts degree from Brown University in
Providence, RI.
Dr. Scher is past-president and
vice-president of the American Academy of Dermatology and was awarded
Honorary Membership in 2004. He is internationally recognized as an
expert in the diagnosis and treatment of nail disorders and nail
surgery. He established specialty nail clinics at NYU, Columbia, and
Brown, which continue to be successful and actively functioning. He has
published or co-edited five textbooks on nail disorders and written well
over 200 articles and book chapters. Currently, Dr. Scher is in the
process of developing a nail program at the University of North Carolina
in a state with four medical schools and no such program. He is a
former Chief Editor of Dialogues in Dermatology and served on many
editorial boards including Journal of American Society for Dermatologic
Surgery and oncology, American Journal of Dermatopathology, Cutis, Skin
and Aging, and many others. He has been a proud member of the Society
for Investigative Dermatology for over three decades.
