Resident Retreat for Future Academicians

June 6-8, 2008
Airlie Center
Warrenton, Virginia

The Resident Retreat for Future Academicians is a two-day informal meeting that seeks to expose young physicians to the challenges and rewards of careers in academics. The Retreat was instituted by the SID in 2001 in response to data that showed the number of academicians in dermatology was rapidly decreasing. The same data also indicated that the number of physician-scientist first-time NIH grant applicants would soon reach critically low numbers and that the pool of residents entering careers in academics would continue to decrease. Today, the SID continues to acknowledge the ongoing need to recruit and train young physicians in physician-scientist, physician/health services research and teaching careers.

Residents and faculty meet to discuss advantages of careers in research and teaching, as well as funding opportunities and opportunities for advancement in academic careers. Each resident receives a Diploma from the SID that accredits the selection process and attendance at the Retreat.

How to Participate
Residency training program directors are asked each year to nominate first-year dermatology residents who are good candidates for research or academic careers. The chief of the dermatology residency training program should select appropriate residents from his/her program to nominate for consideration. Applications will be reviewed by the Program Organizing Committee. Thirty residents from a nationwide pool will be selected to attend the Retreat.

Nominations for 2008 are now being accepted.  To download the nomination brochure click here.
