PhD Retreat

2012 PhD Retreat

The Society for Investigative Dermatology (SID) is pleased to announce the debut of the PhD Retreat at the 2012 Annual Meeting in Raleigh, North Carolina. The 2012 PhD Retreat will be held at the Raleigh Convention Center starting at 4:30pm on Tuesday, May 8 and ending at 3:00pm on Wednesday, May 9.

The PhD Retreat will make its debut in 2012 for 25 young investigators who will be nominated and selected by the PhD Retreat Committee. The program will include training topics such as developing translational research collaborations, finding mentors, writing a paper, finding funding (Non-NIH and NIH), grant writing, developing a niche, interviewing, negotiating a job, climbing the academic ladder, work/life balance, etc. The program format will overlap with the SID Residents Retreat to facilitate interaction, networking and collaboration.

There will also be topical roundtable sessions with patients where translational research ideas and approaches are explored between the two groups. Other Retreat activities include role-playing for interviews, personnel management within labs, time management, etc.

Program Objectives

Participants will have the opportunity to meet with Basic, Clinical and Translational skin biology researchers at career path stages ranging from Early Investigators (up to 5 years Post Doc) to Senior Investigators. They will discuss advantages of careers in research and opportunities for establishing and maintaining a successful research career.

The competitive for funding in the current environment requires creative, collaborative proposals. A major goal of the PhD Retreat is to facilitate multi-disciplinary interaction between PhDs and Dermatology residents early on in their careers.
